License Categories



Category C1 : Small Rigid Goods Vehicle



A goods vehicle over 3.5 tonnes but not exceeding 7.5 tonnes, with the ability to tow a trailer not exceeding 750kg.



Category C (Class 2) : Large Rigid Goods Vehicle



A goods vehicle that exceeds 7.5 tonnes, with the ability to tow a trailer that does not exceed 750KG.



Category C+E (Class 1) : Articulated Vehicle or Rigid LGV and Trailer Combination



A combination of goods vehicle and trailer over 7.5 tonnes, up to 44 tonnes.

Our friendly customer-focused team works closely with each individual candidate, offering practical advice and support at each stage of the LGV licence acquisition process and our professional DSA-registered instructors offer the highest standards of practical training to enable you to achieve the desired results.



Stages to Becoming an LGV Driver


Obtain forms D2 and D4 to apply for your provisional licence


Arrange a medical and ask the GP to complete form D4.


We can book this for you at a special discounted rate


Send forms D2 (Provisional licence application) and D4 (Medical) to DVLA with your current driving licence


When you receive your provisional licence, arrange a driving assessment with Active Training Group, and book your theory tests.


Once you have passed your theory tests, book your practical driver training with Active Training Group. You may also need to book a CPC practical demonstration test if you passed your car test after 1st January 1997


Complete your practical driver training course and test to obtain your Category C1 or C licence


If you have completed a Category C test, you can now train to drive a Category C+E vehicle.


Provisional Category C+E entitlement will automatically be shown on your new licence, with your Category C entitlement, when it is returned from DVLA
